On 13 May 2024, SOLO’s partner Beyond EO Centre of Excellence - NOA hosted a webinar/workshop in the context of the project’s Soil weeks, focusing on the topics of land degradation and soil erosion. The event was attended by around 30 participants with academic backgrounds in agronomy, chemistry, civil engineering, geosciences, geology, environment, biology, and natural resources management.
The online workshop consisted of four presentations by Dr Eleni Vasileiou (National Technical University of Athens), Dr Christos Noulas (Elgo-Dimitra), Dr Konstantinos Loupasakis (National Technical University of Athens) and Dr Maria Tsiafouli (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), which covered the topics of soil and groundwater pollution driven by geological formations, organic carbon-erosion and agriculture, landslides and soil subsidence, as well as soil biodiversity.
The participants were interested in learning more about these topics and participated in productive discussions with the speakers, such as identifying knowledge gaps, actions, and bottlenecks. Furthermore, they expressed great interest in being involved in future SOLO endeavours.
