‘Soils for Europe’ event at the EU Parliament recording is now available

07 May 2025

On Wednesday, 30 April 2025, from 14:00 - 16:00 CET, Renew Europe, University of Coimbra, and PAN Europe hosted a ‘Soils for Europe’ hybrid event at the European Parliament. Organised within SOLO’s framework, the event acted as a follow-up to the trilogue agreement on the proposal for a Soil Monitoring and Resilience Directive that took place on 9 April 2025.

The introduction of the event was led by Martin Hojsík, Vice-President of the European Parliament, whilst the meeting was moderated by SOLO coordinator Carlos Guerra (University of Coimbra). The latter emphasised that the Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law offers a clear direction for future soil-related efforts, enabling large-scale actions on soil health. Whilst the law provides hope and directions, it is not without its challenges, as there is still a lack of standardised soil monitoring frameworks.

The event provided an opportunity for experts in the field to discuss the potential of the Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law, while acknowledging the challenges that remain due to the lack of harmonised monitoring standards.

Scientists from EU-funded projects shared their expertise, with a large portion of discussions focusing on the importance of monitoring, policy support and farmer engagement. Current efforts across such projects aim to fill these gaps by providing knowledge and strategies, with a broad agreement on the importance of treating soil as a living system requiring active management and clear benchmarks.
