Soil Week 2025: NOA leads webinar on soil health

28 Feb 2025

On 25 February 2025, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) organised its second Soil Week event under SOLO in the form of a webinar focusing on the critical challenges in soil health. The event targeted research communities, industry professionals, EU institutions and agricultural and policy stakeholders. It focused on advancing soil health in Europe and presented research findings, Earth Observation (EO)- based tools, and methodologies for soil monitoring.

The participants showed a strong interest in expanding their knowledge of the various topics presented and actively engaged in meaningful discussions with the speakers. These interactions were especially valuable, as they focused on identifying knowledge gaps, potential actions, and challenges within the field. This enthusiasm extended beyond the event, with many participants expressing a desire to be involved in future SOLO initiatives.

Additionally, feedback from the event emphasised the participants' appreciation for the wide range of scientific fields covered, making the webinar engaging and informative. A key piece of feedback was the suggestion to include decision-makers in future events, reflecting the attendees' strong engagement and their desire for more in-depth discussions and activities.

During the discussions, participants proposed several ideas to the presenters that could enhance their research and findings. One notable suggestion was to correlate the soil biodiversity map of Greece (presented by Maria Tsiafouli, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) with its desertification map (presented by Dimitrios Tsesmelis, University of Patras).

A key outcome of the event was the initiation of collaborations among participants, highlighting an alignment with SOLO’s goals. Overall, the event succeeded in sparking interest, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, and gathering valuable feedback for future initiatives.
